Partnership collaborates on depth sensing technology

Smart glasses leveraging VoxelSensors' SPAES depth sensing technology and Qualcomm XR platform.

VoxelSensors has announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. to jointly optimize VoxelSensors’ depth sensing sensing technology for Snapdragon XR platforms. This is expected to help bring the industry closer to mainstream adoption of all-day wearable augmented reality (AR) devices.

Qualcomm said VoxelSensors’ technology “offers the potential to deliver higher performance rates with significantly lower power consumption” for small and lightweight AR smart glasses.

VoxelSensors’ single photon active event sensor (SPAES) 3D sensing technology solves current critical depth sensing performance limitations for robotics and extended reality (XR) by delivering a 10× power savings and lower latency, while maintaining performance across different lighting conditions.

This technology will enable machines to understand both the physical world and human behavior from the user’s point-of-view, which will advance physical AI, VoxelSensors said.

However, physical AI also poses some challenges, the company said, extending the boundaries of operation to wider environments that include variable lighting and power constraints.

VoxelSensors believes its technology addresses both challenges by expanding the operative limits of current day sensors, and collecting human point-of-view data to better train physical AI models.

Qualcomm will optimize the SPAES 3D sensing technology with the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 platform, enabling a low-latency and flexible 3D active event data stream. The solution will be available to select customers and partners by December 2025.
