Microchip intros off-the-shelf rad-hard power converter

Microchip's SA15-28 rad-hard power converter.

Microchip Technology Inc. has expanded its radiation-hardened (rad-hard) DC/DC converter portfolio with the introduction of the  SA15-28, an off-the-shelf rad-hard DC/DC 15-W power converter with a companion SF100-28 electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter that meets MIL-STD-461 specifications. The space-grade power device is a standard, non-hybrid DC/DC isolated power converter with a companion EMI filter operating from a 28-V satellite bus in harsh environments.

The SA15-28 is designed to operate across a wide temperature range from −55°C to 125°C and offers radiation tolerance up to 100 krad TID. The SA15-28 and SF100-28 are fully compatible with Microchip’s existing SA50 series of power converters and SF200 filter.

The SA15-28 features 5-V triple outputs for use with point-of-load converters and low-dropout linear regulators to power FPGAs and microprocessors (MPUs). The SF100-28 EMI noise suppression filter can be used with many power converters with a total output power of up to 100 W. The SA15-28 is housed in a small form-factor, measuring approximately 1.68 cubic inch, and weighs 60 grams, to meet size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements. Output voltage combinations can be customized.

The SA family of rad-hard DC/DC power converters for space applications feature surface-mount component construction for flexibility and customization. Available in standard non-hybrid, space-grade configurations with 15-W and 50-W options, the devices are qualified to MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-883, and MIL-STD-202 standards.

In addition, by offering commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices, Microchip said it allows customers to scale their designs and reduce manufacturing delays. This scalable approach enables customers to upgrade from COTS to space-qualified level or from radiation-hardened by design (RHBD) to sub-QML packaging options in ceramic or plastic.

The SA15-28 DC/DC power converter and SF100-28 external EMI filter are available to purchase. The SA15-28 is supported by comprehensive analysis and test reports including worst-case analysis, electrical stress analysis, and reliability analysis.
