Microchip Expands PolarFire FPGA Video Ecosystem with SDI IP

Microchip Technology has expanded its PolarFire FPGA smart embedded video ecosystem, introducing new Serial Digital Interface IP cores and a quad CoaXPress bridge kit designed to support high-bandwidth, low-power video applications.

The latest solution stacks are aimed at developers working on medical imaging, industrial vision and robotic systems that require reliable, broadcast-quality video transport with minimal latency and power consumption. By combining hardware evaluation kits, FPGA IP cores, development tools and reference designs, Microchip is enabling faster development cycles while helping customers reduce system complexity and time to market.

The expanded ecosystem includes SDI receive and transmit IP cores supporting SMPTE-compliant 1.5G, 3G, 6G and 12G-SDI video transport. These capabilities make the solution suitable for both professional broadcast environments and embedded imaging systems. HDMI-to-SDI and SDI-to-HDMI bridging is also supported, enabling 4K and 8K video workflows across a wide range of applications.

Microchip is currently the only known FPGA vendor offering a quad CoaXPress FPGA-based solution, allowing direct bridging between SLVS-EC sensor interfaces and CoaXPress 2.0 without the need for third-party IP. The solution supports SLVS-EC data rates of up to 5 Gbps per lane and CoaXPress 2.0 speeds of up to 12.5 Gbps per lane, enabling complete end-to-end video pipelines for high-performance vision systems.

Built on the ultra-low-power, non-volatile architecture of PolarFire FPGAs, the solution stacks enable compact, fanless and secure video system designs. Integrated security features, including anti-tamper protection and layered hardware and data security, help OEMs meet stringent system integrity requirements while reducing bill of material costs.

Native support for Sony SLVS-EC image sensors also provides an upgrade path for designs affected by discontinued components. Developers can further accelerate development using Microchip’s Libero Design Suite and SmartHLS high-level synthesis tools.
