Enter the haunted supply chain of horrors

Electronics Sourcing’s managing editor, Jon Barrett

Step inside, if you dare: the supply chain haunted house, full of strange noises, flickering lights and things that go bump in the night. For purchasing professionals, the ghosts and ghouls can be all too real.

In one darkened corridor, ghostly lead times float further away, leaving production managers shivering with uncertainty. Around a hidden corner lurk skeleton inventories, bare bones on shelves just as demand suddenly rattles to life.

Cobwebbed alleyways lead to logistic dungeons, where containers creak like rusty gates, delayed at ports or snarled in paperwork. Beware vampire price hikes which appear without warning and drain budgets faster than you can run.

One dingy room hides phantom stock, where components magically appear, only to suddenly vanish when really needed. In another chamber, counterfeit components lie in wait, ready to spook the unwary buyer who doesn’t look closely enough under the mask.

However, haunted supply chains can be tamed. Purchasing professionals can navigate the shadows with their lantern of data visibility, shield of supplier collaboration and map of multi-sourcing strategies. Even the darkest supply corridors suddenly seem less frightening.

This October remember that supply chain scares thrive in the shadows. Transparency, foresight and trusted partnerships are the best ways to turn fear into confidence. While haunted houses are meant for seasonal thrills, the business of keeping components flowing is all year round.

Keep your nerve and don’t forget to check your torch batteries.
