Chip antennas support SiP modules

Kyocera AVX's 2.4-GHz multiprotocol chip antennas for SiP modules.

Kyocera AVX has introduced three compact and high-performance internal, on-board, multiprotocol, 2.4-GHz antennas targeting high-demand system-in-package (SiP) applications. These include 5G mobile, wearables, high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), IoT, and autonomous vehicles.

SiP modules contain several ICs with different functions in a single miniature chip carrier package, and sometimes include silicon and passive components as well. The ICs perform specialized system functions as well as most of the functions of an electronic system such as processing and memory and are used to meet miniaturization, performance, and cost optimization demands.

The new RoHS-compliant solutions include a ceramic antenna, corner chip antenna, and ultra-small chip antenna. All three are linearly polarized antennas.

The 1001312 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Zigbee/Matter ceramic antenna features a high efficiency (62%), 1.88 dBi peak gain, and superior RF field containment in a miniature 2.0 × 1.2 × 0.55-mm SMT package that weighs 0.003 g. It supports the 2,400–2,485-MHz band in addition to a configuration for 6.0–8.5 GHz for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. It is available in an A-Series automotive version (A1001312) as well.

The 9005868 2.4-GHz corner chip antenna supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, WLAN, ISM, and Matter protocols. Designed for corner placement, it addresses applications with small PCBs. It features an omnidirectional radiation pattern and offers high efficiency (72%), 4.0 dBi peak gain, and superior RF field containment in one of the smallest, lightest, and lowest profile SMT packages currently available in the market, according to Kyocera AVX, measuring 1.0 × 0.58 × 0.35 mm and weighing 0.0009 g. The operating temperature range is -55°C to 125°C, offering high reliability and repeatability over temperature compared to traditional ceramic chip antennas thanks to its tight tolerance, the company said. It is available in an A-Series automotive version (A9005868).

The 9001978 ultra-small 2.4-GHz chip antenna delivers high functionality, versatility, and performance in a small and thin design. As one of the smallest, lightest, and lowest profile SMT packages currently available on the market, it measures 1.00 × 0.55 × 0.40 and weighs less than 0.001 g. It supports 2,400–2,485-MHz band protocols, including Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Matter, in addition to configurations for 6.0–8.5 GHz for UWB and 2.4/5.0-GHz dual-band Wi-Fi applications. It’s also available in A-Series automotive Bluetooth, UWB, and dual-band Wi-Fi versions, qualified according to AEC-200 standards. Like the corner chip antenna, it also provides high reliability and repeatability over temperature compared to traditional ceramic chip antennas. Key specs include high efficiency (65%), 3.0 dBi peak gain in 2,400–2,485-MHz applications, and an extended operating temperatures of -55°C to 125°C.

A-Series versions are suited for applications such as wireless battery management systems and tire pressure monitoring systems. Each antenna is also available with downloadable resources including PCB layouts in drawing interchange format (DXF) files and Ansys HFSS and CST encrypted simulation files.
