In this article Thomas Smart summarizes the findings of the 2024 independent distributors report, highlighting the performance of different sectors from automotive to building control.
In 2024, the global distribution of electronic component sales by end application was led by the automotive sector, which captured 21 per cent of the total market. This leadership reflects the accelerating shift toward vehicle electrification and the growing complexity of automotive electronics. With electric vehicles requiring significantly more components than traditional internal combustion models particularly in power management, battery control, and sensor systems the automotive industry has become a cornerstone of component demand.
Close behind, the energy and power segment accounted for 14 per cent of sales. The expansion of renewable energy sources and energy storage infrastructure has driven sustained demand for high-efficiency power semiconductors and control electronics. As global energy strategies prioritize grid modernization and distributed generation, component suppliers have seen strong growth in this application area.
The medical sector followed with a 13 per cent share, reflecting a steady rise in electronic content across diagnostic, therapeutic and wearable technologies. Medical systems increasingly rely on miniaturized, high-precision components designed for both reliability and compliance, particularly in regulated environments such as imaging equipment.
Consumer electronics remained a significant category, representing 12 per cent of total sales. While traditional consumer products have matured, innovation continues in smart devices and connected home ecosystems, sustaining the need for compact, high-integration components.
Industrial automation and mobile communication devices each contributed nine per cent. In industrial environments, demand has been driven by factory digitization and robotics, whereas the mobile segment continues to evolve with 5G expansion and the growing complexity of RF and power architectures in modern smartphones.
Rounding out the top ten were aerospace and defense (seven per cent); computers and peripherals (six per cent); telecommunications infrastructure (five per cent); and building and home control systems (four per cent).
This year’s report shows Kaga Electronics topping the independent distributors list globally with $3.62b in global sales, followed by Shenzhen Huaqiang 深圳华强 with $3.05b and Smith with $2.60b. The slowdown in market conditions has seen a reverse in growth compared to 2023 with Smith topping the table with a 34.7 per cent increase on 2023. The USA is on top by sales by headquarters location comprising 39.3 per cent of total top 10 sales, followed by China with 31.8 per cent and rounding off the top three with Japan at 28.9 per cent.
