40-W DC/DC converters save board space

XP Power's BCT40T series of 40-W DC/DC converters.

XP Power has launched the BCT40T series of 40-W DC/DC converters. Featuring high power density, these DC/DC converters provide a power solution for a wide range of demanding industrial, ITE, and communications applications where space is a critical constraint. Key sectors include test & measurement, robotics, process control, analytical instruments, and communications equipment.

The BCT40T series is housed in a 1 × 1-in. (25.4 × 25.4 mm) compact metal package designed for printed-circuit-board (PCB) mounting. The ultra-compact metal package saves PCB area, allowing more room for application circuitry. The BCT40T reduces required board space by 50% compared to many 40-W alternatives that are housed in larger 2 × 1-in. (50.8 × 24.4 mm) packages, according to XP Power.

The DC/DC converter series offers single regulated outputs ranging from 3.3 V to 24 VDC, plus the flexibility of ±10% output voltage adjustment via an external trim resistor; and dual regulated outputs at ±12 VDC and ±15 VDC. Models have nominal 24-VDC inputs (9.0 V to 36.0 VDC) and 48-VDC inputs (18.0 V to 75.0 VDC), and a wide 4:1 input voltage range to support operation across multiple input voltages.

The BCT40T series provides efficiency up to 89%. It features a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to 105°C, and a broader full-load operating temperature range, compared to many alternatives, according to XP Power. For safety, there is remote on/off functionality, enabling energy savings and safe shutdowns.

Protection features also include 2-kVDC isolation between input and output, continuous short-circuit protection with auto-recovery, and overload protection between 130% and 180%. It also incorporates overtemperature protection (at 115°C case temperature), under-voltage lockout (UVLO), and overvoltage protection via a Zener diode clamp.

The BCT40T devices meet worldwide safety approvals including IEC/UL/EN62368-1 standards and applicable CE and UKCA directives; EN55032 Class A/B for conducted and radiated emissions; and EN61000-4-x for immunity.

The BCT40T series is currently available direct from XP Power and authorized distributors including Avnet Abacus, Digi-Key, Distrelec, Farnell, Mouser, RS,  and TME. The series offers a three-year warranty.
