TE launches modular FO transceiver platform

TE's MULTIGIG FO transceiver platform.

TE Connectivity (TE) has launched the MULTIGIG transceiver (TRX) platform at the Paris Air Show. The fiber-optic (FO) transceiver platform offers high modularity to meet the data-intensive requirements of aerospace, defense, and marine applications. It also enables customizable designs as well as easy upgrades and repairs.

The platform leverages TE’s Light Engine Platform (LEP), a modular platform of up to 12 chiclet-based optical transceivers (CBOT) capable of transmitting and receiving up to 10 Gbits/s each. Supporting a variety of rugged industry-standard fiber-optic termini and cables, the solution offers dual Tx, dual Rx, and TRx blade options for full-height, duplex pigtails and Tx and RX-options for half-height simplex pigtails.

Key specifications include a data rate range of 20 Mbits/s to 10 Gbits/s, 850-nm wavelength, and operating temperature of -40°C to 85°C. The platform is tested to applicable standards such as DO-160G, VITA 46 and 47, MIL-STD-883, and IEEE 10G Base-SR.

The modular MULTIGIG transceiver platform offers easy upgrades, repairs, or replacements of components without requiring a complete system redesign. It also allows for future expansions such as installing a larger housing and populating empty positions with the same module.

With an electrical interface through the MULTIGIG RT high-speed press-fit pin PCB interface, each duplex pigtailed transceiver uses one position in the press-fit housing. This enables the transceivers to be individually removed in case of damaged cables without having to replace the entire module.

The solution delivers more flexibility to place FO transceivers for optimal performance, expanding accessibility of fiber-optic cables for faster data transmission, TE said.

One example is in-flight entertainment, which could use ARINC 818 or 4K video. The modular design would allow for late-stage configuration and upgrades without PCB changes, the company said.

Combined with TE’s rugged optical fiber connector and harnessing capabilities, the MULTIGIG transceiver platform targets military/aerospace, commercial aerospace, missile defense, military marine, eVTOL, and space applications.
