Real-time MCUs improve motor control in home appliances

TI's C2000 real-time MCUs are used for motor control in home appliances.

Texas Instruments Inc. has launched a C2000 real-time microcontroller (MCU) portfolio that combines high performance and lower cost. The new F28E120SC and F28E120SB are TI’s most affordable C2000 real-time MCUs and provide 30% faster computing power than previous C2000 MCUs for single motor and power factor correction systems.

TI's C2000 real-time MCUs are used for motor control in home appliances.The MCUs raise the performance level of home appliances, including washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, and power tools. Via its proprietary InstaSPIN field-oriented control (FOC) software and advanced algorithms, the new portfolio enables smoother, quieter, and greater efficiency in motor performance.

The F28E12x series delivers the necessary  performance  to enable premium motor-control features at a lower price than competing devices, while eliminating additional components, TI said.

Advanced features include high-speed sensorless FOC, high-torque zero-speed startup, and sophisticated vibration compensation, increasing motor control response for home appliances.

The series delivers fast execution of the sensorless FOC algorithm for motor speeds over 120,000 rpm, or 2-kHz electrical frequency, and can run a vibration compensation algorithm, achieving up to a 60% speed ripple reduction. This counteracts the acoustic noise and vibrations caused by an imbalanced load in applications such as washing machines, TI said.

Preproduction quantities of the F28E12x MCUs are currently available with package and memory variants starting at $0.49 in quantities of 1,000. An evaluation module is also available, priced at $19. Other resources include motor- and power-control reference designs, and a full motor-control software development kit with code examples, application-specific algorithms, and a graphical device configuration tool.
