Multi-power hybrid connector saves space

Hirose Electric Co., Ltd. has expanded its hybrid flexible printed circuit (FPC) to board connector family with a multi-power version that supports high power capacity in a compact footprint. The BK11 Series multi-power hybrid FPC-to-board connector, with a 0.35-mm pitch and 0.6-mm stacking height, measures 5.33 mm in length and 1.9 mm in width, making it suited for portable and wearable devices.

This hybrid connector offers selectable power contact usage with two main power contacts supporting 4 A per pin, four sub-power contacts supporting 2.5 A per pin, and 10 signal contacts. The BK11 helps save up to 46% of mounting space compared to conventional hybrid connectors by reducing the number of signal contacts, Hirose said.

The selectable power contact usage gives designers of smartphones, wireless earbuds, smart watches, and other wearables greater design flexibility. The BK11 power contacts can be configured as 4 A × two positions plus 2.5 A × four positions and 8 A × two positions.

Like other Hirose FPC-to-board connectors, the BK11 comes with a fully armored design that covers both ends of the housing with metal for enhanced robustness. It also reduces the risk of housing damage from misalignment when mating. The hybrid connector also features a wide self-alignment range of ±0.32 mm (pitch direction) and ±0.23 mm (width direction), which simplifies mating operation.

The BK11 Series is designed for pick-and-place mounting. It also features a molded plug and receptacle design that helps prevent solder wicking for improved manufacturing reliability.
