LDO regulator enables lower noise

Diodes Inc.'s AP7372 LDO regulator.

Diodes Incorporated has introduced its AP7372 low-noise low-dropout (LDO) regulator, aimed at noise-sensitive applications such as  test and measurement, communication, industrial automation, and medical equipment. The high power supply ripple rejection (PSRR) LDO  powers precision components such as data converters (ADCs, DACs), voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), and phase-locked loops (PLLs).

The AP7372 helps designers mitigate the effects of input source noise and meet stringent output ripple and noise, Diodes said, thanks to an extremely low output noise at 8 μVrms and up to 90-dB PSRR across a wide frequency range.

The LDO features up to 200-mA output current with a dropout voltage (VDO) of 120 mV. Five variants are available, providing fixed output voltages of 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V, and 5.0 V, and an adjustable voltage down to 1.2 V. Fine adjustments of the fixed outputs are achieved via a dedicated pin for a resistor-divider.

The AP7372, with an input voltage range from 2.7 V to 20 V, can be powered from common bus standards such as 12 V and 5 V or battery voltage (VBAT) down to a single lithium-ion cell. Other features include an adjustable soft-start time, which is set using an external capacitor, allowing designers to optimize the power-rail ramp up to mitigate inrush currents and produce a stable supply; built-in thermal protection, and a current limiter protects against short-circuit and overcurrent.

For power savings, the LDO features an enable pin that can be used for system-level control such as power-up sequencing and to save energy by shutting down the regulator when not in use. The shutdown current is approximately 3 µA with a quiescent current of 66 μA.

The  AP7372 is housed in a 1.2 × 1.0-mm U-WLB1012-6 (Type A1) ball-grid-array package. The LDO is priced at $0.30 in quantities of 1,000.
