Entry-level MCUs deliver high performance

GigaDevice's GD32C231 series of entry-level MCUs.

GigaDevice has launched its GD32C231 series of entry-level microcontrollers. The series represents a high-performance, entry-level solution for applications such as small home appliances, battery management systems, small-screen display devices, handheld consumer products, industrial auxiliary controls, and automotive aftermarket systems.

Built on Arm’s advanced Cortex-M23 core architecture, the series offers up to 10% higher performance than the Cortex-M0+, with clock speeds reaching 48 MHz, and supports efficient processing capabilities such as integer division, enhancing software execution efficiency.

The GD32C231 series is designed to overcome performance limitations of traditional entry-level chips by integrating a rich set of peripherals, which enhances system integration and design flexibility, and adopting an industrial-grade temperature range of -40°C to 105°C and wide voltage range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V. It also offers a comprehensive ecosystem.

Key features include 32 KB to 64 KB of embedded Flash and 12 KB of low-power SRAM, with full memory areas equipped with ECC error correction. With multiple power management modes, the MCU consumes as little as 5 μA in deep sleep mode and offers ultra-fast 2.6-μs wake-up time, which is suited for battery-powered and portable applications.

Given its integrated chip design, the series reduces the number of external components, providing a bill-of-materials cost-optimized solution.

The solution meets 8-kV contact discharge and 15-kV air discharge standards for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. Full ECC error correction is applied across Flash and SRAM memory, and an integrated hardware CRC module enhances data transmission integrity, all ensuring reliable performance in safety-critical environments.

The MCU series also supports up to 45 GPIOs in a 48-pin package, providing expandability for complex designs. Multiple package options are available, including TSSOP20/LGA20, QFN28, LQFP32/QFN32, and LQFP48/QFN48.

The GD32C231 series is backed by a comprehensive development ecosystem. Standard software libraries and resources are available, along with documentation, including datasheets, user manuals, hardware design guidelines, application notes, and porting references. A complete SDK firmware package is also available with sample code and development board resources that cover everything from low-level drivers to advanced applications.
