AI enters the anticounterfeit battle zone

Electronics Sourcing’s managing editor, Jon Barrett

As a technology journalist I’ve been tracking artificial intelligence for years. I committed to working with it about two years ago and remain staggered by its capabilities on a weekly basis.

Recently I’ve started seeing AI creep into anticounterfeiting discussions and could immediately see its potential on a short, medium and long term basis. Traditional anticounterfeiting measures such as manual visual inspection, verified supplier lists and time consuming testing protocols set the current pace of activities. Now enter AI.

Short term I anticipate AI enabled computer vision systems capable of analysing thousands of images every second, detecting microscopic discrepancies in packaging, parts and documentation that might otherwise go undetected. The more these systems find, the more they learn and share, creating a global database of anticounterfeiting knowledge updated every millisecond.

Medium term I see AI tapping into vast supply chain datasets including procurement records, shipping manifests, supplier audits and more. From these patterns AI will update risk profiles in real time, anticipating potential counterfeit risks before they exist. Think instantaneous global supplier vetting processes.

Long term, once AI has vacuumed up sufficient past incidents, predictive analytics and learning models will anticipate vulnerabilities and robotically reinforce supply chain resilience. Combined with blockchain, AI will manage immutable, verifiable records of component origin and history, creating unbreakable digital passports.

Does all this sound too farfetched? The truth is the technology already exists and there is a pot of gold for the winners. The race is on and I’m in.
